James H. Wilson was involved with the organization and implementation of the Certified Hyperbaric Technology program for the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology. He is Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Diving Contractors and a member of the Board of the Diving Certification Board of Canada. He is a long standing Associate Member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Society and for many years has been a member of the Safety Committee. He is a member of the Great Lakes Chapter. He has served the Chapter twice as President and is currently the Secretary-Treasurer. He is President of the HMCS Haida Association and on the Board of Directors of the Friends of HMCS Haida Since the inception of the Canadian Standards Association Diving Committees he has served on the Technical Committee for Diving and Caisson Systems and the associated subcommittees of Hyperbaric (past Chairman), Diving Construction in Compressed Air, commercial diving competency and training and the Construction Association of Ontario, Commercial Diving Management Health & Safety Committees. He is on the Advisory Committee for Seneca College Underwater Skills.
As a member of the Royal Canadian Navy he served in convoy duty in the North Atlantic during World War II and aboard HMCS Haida on her first trip to Japan during the Korean War. He qualified as a naval diver 1948. On returning from Japan he elected to transfer to the newly established Clearance Diving Branch and in 1954 qualified in Deep Diving, United States Navy, Washington, DC. He was Chief Diver of the first Arctic Exploration and Beach Clearance Team for the Defense Early Warning Radar sites. He was the first Chief Diver of the Experimental Diving Unit of DCIEM, now DRDC (Defence Research and Development Canada).
On his retirement from the Navy he was appointed as Manager/ Safety Director of the Hyperbaric Department of Toronto General Hospital. Since his retirement from Toronto General he continues his association with the hospital and satisfies call back as a senior hyperbaric controller. He operates his own business as a hyperbaric consultant and coordinates and lectures in the Basic Hyperbaric Medicine Course provided by his company.
